yes i have some plugins, and I did try to disable them to no avail, I
could try that again , I have been trying that in Synaptic. Should I
remove the whole program and redo, I would hate to have to do that
with all the emails and contact info I have stored in this :-( I

Well, when you created your account you had to choose a type of account.
What did you choose? If you don't remember you can use
Edit->Preferences, then choose the "Mail Accounts" tab, your mail
account, Edit, then the Receiving Email tab.
Removing the Evolution package won't delete any of your email or contact
info: that information is kept in your home directory. Removing
Evolution will just remove the program itself, not your customizations.
You can try removing it and reinstalling it; that might help.
It might also be useful to shut down Evo completely. Have you rebooted
your system? If so that would do it. If not, you can open a terminal
window (Applications -> Accessories -> Terminal), then enter:
evolution --force-shutdown
(note two minus signs in a row before "force"), then try again.
