[Evolution] trash bin

Why is it that despite the fact that I haven't put a single item in the
trash bin, when I click on "trash", every single e-mail I've received so
far appears there? Those e-mails are also present in the various folders
I've created for them, but they also appear when I open the "trash"
folder. --Which is somewhat concerning, because if I were to right click
on "empty trash", I worry that all my e-mails would be deleted.

Am I misunderstanding something?
