in general, how does one know, when trying to compile from source,
which options to use?
In general, "configure" alone should be all that's needed to build an
application or library with a reasonable set of defaults.
In this case there are several options for configuring LDAP support, but
not enabling it at all is a poor default. A better approach is to
automatically use whatever is detected, like configure does with just
about everything else. But there may be valid technical reasons for
disabling it by default that I'm not aware of.
