Your complaints appear to be about Suse, not about Evolution (or even
about Linux). It's certainly worrying that YAST is offering you evo 2.4
with e-d-s 1.6 so I suspect a screwup at Suse. We seem to have seen a
fair amount of questions recently specifically about Suse. Maybe a lot
of list members use it, or maybe it's just broken.
However you say you want to run Linux. I don't want to start a distro
flamewar, but there are other options: Fedora, Ubuntu, Debian, ...
I too have complaints about Evo, which I occasionally ventilate on this
list, but they usually are about design decisions and bugs that have no
relation to my distro (currently Fedora Core 5, which has Evo 2.6 out of
the box.)
I've never used Exchange in any form and hope never to need to, so I
won't presume to give you advice about it. However, note that one of the
main reasons for there not being more client support for it in Linux is
that AFAIK it uses proprietary MS protocols and data formats. This means
either paying MS for a license and making the client non-free, or
reverse engineering the protocol on the wire (as with Samba).

Hi again. Thanks to those that replied last time.
I have tried the supplemental YAST repositories for my SuSE 9.3 install
and still no joy in getting a running evolution. The version posted on
the supplemental archive are not compatible with each other.
evolution 2.4.1-16
evolution-data-server-1.6.0-16
There are shared libs required by evolution that are not supplied by the
data server, looks like the data server is too new for the client.
I can't believe it is this difficult to get a program installed and
running. No surprise that Micro$soft has such a stong hold. I am now at
the point of giving up and staying with WinXP for my laptop despite
wanting to run Linux. However my company make extensive use of MS
Exchange and I need to be able to work with it. It is also surprising
that there is only evolution available as a linux exchange client,
especially when it appears to be so unstable. Such a disappointment.
