Oddly enough, tree widgets haven't existed since the dawn of time.  As it is, etable isn't entirely the same as the windows one which lets you do multiple range selects too.

I doubt most software documents it simply because it's "common
knowledge" just like you wouldn't document how to click a button.

Well I should sure expect a top-level 'gnome desktop' user guide to describe the mouse buttons.  e.g. particularly since X can use 3, and not just 2 or 1.  I would also expect it to explain common widget behaviour, drag and drop, and the like.  These are not 'intuitive concepts', they are merely 'similar' to other systems which makes the transition relatively obvious - but only if you are already familiar with using a windowing system.

Although evolution's widgets aren't all standard anyway.
