Thanks for the input everyone.  I stand corrected.  It turns out that
what is happening is that a cron process is trying to mail me (as root)
about a problem in executing a cron job and is unable to do so.  So it
spits out error messages into the log.  It just happens to do so every
10 minutes just like Evolution is set to check email but that's just
coincidental.  

My goof entirely.  Again my apologies.  Evolution is completely
faultless in this.  

The lesson here, at least for me, is to be more careful about jumping to
conclusions next time :).
