[Evolution] Problem with automake

I had a problem configuring libsoup-2.2 CVS snapshot (needed to compile
evo).  Turns out I needed to update my automake.  Now that I have
automake1.6 and automake1.7 rpms installed (I'm on Mandrake 9.2), I
retried and got the same error:

Running automake --gnu  ...
Makefile.am:2: require version 1.6, but have 1.4-p6
docs/reference/Makefile.am:2: require version 1.6, but have 1.4-p6

It then spits out when it can't find Makefile.in.

I think the problem is that, though I have automake-1.7, it still sees
my old install of automake-1.4.  (I didn't remove that one because I'm
afraid other programs on my Mandrake install will still need it.)  How
do I get autogen.sh to see automake-1.7 instead of automake-1.4?
