Hi,
ah, after i've got the warnings, i googled a bit, and noticed, that the
problem was already discussed on this list. But a real solution was
missing. But you gave someone a hint, that he should trace evolutions
syscalls. I've done that now:
56538 evolution-1.4 CALL access(0xbfbfbfe0,0)
56538 evolution-1.4 NAMI "/usr/X11R6/share/gnome/pixmaps/gnome-unknown.png"
56538 evolution-1.4 RET access -1 errno 2 No such file or directory
56538 evolution-1.4 CALL getpid
56538 evolution-1.4 RET getpid 56538/0xdcda
56538 evolution-1.4 CALL write(0x2,0x884d700,0x8a)
56538 evolution-1.4 GIO fd 2 wrote 138 bytes
"
(evolution:56538): GdkPixbuf-CRITICAL **: file gdk-pixbuf-io.c: line 7\
29 (gdk_pixbuf_new_from_file): assertion `filename != NULL' failed
"
The gnome-unknown.png is located on my system in
/usr/X11R6/share/icons/gnome/48x48/apps/gnome-unknown.png. I've created
a symlink, and everything works fine know.
Thank you,
Gerhard.

make sure you have, uh, gnome-data i think, installed. run evolution
from a terminal, it should spit warnings about missing icons and image
files.
