This is a valuable tip... but... what are you supposed to do if you have
to copy 10,000's of users from one NFS server to another, and you don't
have access to all of the NFS clients, and no reliable way of getting in
touch with all of the users?

How about bringing the server up in single-user mode, or at run level 3
if that's not feasible, so that no X services will be running?

This is great for machines an admin has access to, but the difficulty is
that there are X servers running on a large number of machines, not only
the NFS server...
