Right there is your problem.  I was using a CVS build of evolution 1.5
with Mandrake cooker (pre-gnome-2.6) and it always played the
notification sound (too often - like when moving mails from folder to
folder).  Since Cooker updated to GNOME 2.6, I've lost my notification.
The sound daemon starts up, but no mail notification.

I posted a question on the Mandrake Cooker mailing list, but have not
seen a response.

Errrm ... well, it //may// be related to a recent update to Gnome, I
suppose, but it //was// working with Evo 1.4.6 under Gnome 2.6 on this
cooker box, and the new mail notification only stopped after updating to
Evo 1.5.7 ... though the timing //could// have been coincidence, I
suppose <shrug>.

FWIW, I never experienced any problems with excessive sound
notifications as you did (e.g., when moving messages, etc.).
