simply don't change the hostname, problem solved. leave it as the FQDN
and everything will just magically work.

Yeah, except the FQDN does not work when I'm in the office its
(purposely I believe), set up this way by our support staff. As I'm the
only one in my office who uses Evolution and has this problem, I'm
unsupported...

If the IP of the work IMAP server is static, edit your /etc/hosts file.

If it is not static, there would be other hacks left.

I had a handy init script, that determines the network by MAC addresses
and changed some of the /etc/hosts entries accordingly. This was
necessary, as I was in a similar situation: The IP of the very same IMAP
server differed between the local and public net.
