[Evolution] Text formatting features

Hi,
I am currently using Evolution 1.1.4. When I compose a message
I am unable to use most of the text formatting features and the
smileys because the buttons and menu options are inactive (greyd
out.) I am even unable to find a configuration option to fix this.
Is this an issue with my installations only, or are there other
folks having the same problem?
Some enlightenment would be quite appreciated.
