I previously had similar issue quite some time ago after
upgrade/migration to 1.4.* .  My 1st recommendation would be create a
test user on your machine, login as this new user, and see if a new
Evolution user encounters the same problem.

What Linux distribution?  What "spell" "packages" are installed?
