On reason that could produce duplicates is the way multisync works... if
it encounters changes on both sides it will duplicate the contact so
that the user can delete the contact he does not want to have on one
side. so if for some reason multisync thinks that a lot of the contacts
are modified on both (this could be if you did not sync for a long time)
it will produce a lot of duplicates.
Multisync is writen to no interfere with the user. so there are (almost)
no popup boxes or stuff like this.

i played with multisync, and it syncs, but duplicates, not a big deal, i
just removed the duplicates, but that showed up to be deleting
everything, as it showed them twice only, and it synced my workstation
like that too, so now i have no contacts, i though "ok, i will just look
at my backup archive", i made a bzip2 of my ~/evolution. in that dir i
see local/contacts, and there are some files there, but it doesent work
just to copy them from my bzip2 into ~/evolution. why? is it saved in
gconf? how do i recover? (if its possible)
I'm sorry to hear that you have had problems. I can assure you that it
works for me. Th duplicates I had were the contacts that had 'drifted'
on one machine. For instance, one had a new phone number, another had a
new email address. I love this feature. Anyway, to point out that at
least my experiences with Multisync are positive.
