Guenther, thanks very much for the advice. The upgrade worked flawlessly
- as you had described - and I am now sending my first message from
Evolution, Rel.1.2.2.

I have installed Evolution, Ver.1.0.2, as part of my SUSE Linux 8.0
distribution. I would like to upgrade to the latest release (found in
Ximian's Web site). It says that I have to use the Red-Carpet tool.
My question is: do I have to uninstall the SUSE-originated program
before installing the one I will download from Ximian (using
Red-Carpet)? If I do have to uninstall, will the new Ximian version take
over my existing mailbox directories structure (once installed)? If I do
not uninstall the SUSE version, will the new Ximian version overwrite
the SUSE one (which is actually what I want to accomplish) or will I end
up having two separate / parallel versions of Evolution installed in my
system?
To upgrade Evolution, just get Red Carpet from
http://ximian.com/products/redcarpet/download.html
and follow the instructions to install.
Make sure, you have closed all running Evo and run 'killev' as user.
As root start 'red-carpet', subscribe to the Evolution channel and get
all packets offered there.
Evo gets updated automatically (the old packages get erased), and you
end up with just one version (1.2.2).
Starting Evo 1.2.2 the first time will recognize your current
configuration. Though you should check all options under
Tools / Settings
As you liked Evo 1.0.2, you will love Evo 1.2.2. :) Have fun...
