FWIW we've started working on some ideas for 1.6 - unfortunately most of
the discussion has only happened internally so far, and by the time we
realised we should move it public we all got too busy fixing new bugs
again.  Oh well.

At least for the mailer (which has issues with this), one of the
priorities is for architectural cleanup - if we manage to get the time
to do this properly it'll make doing what you list below as a lot
easier.  But still, for now, the plan is pretty undefined apart from a
few specific needed requirements.  As 1.4.x stabilises further we'll
have more time to focus.
