[Evolution] Evolution Won't Read Local Mail Spool

I'm using XD2 on Redhat 9 and Evolution refuses to read my local mail spool 
(e.g., /var/spool/mail/...). No obvious error messages.

There's mail in the spool and Evolution is configured correctly.  I've Googled 
and seen some posts from a year or so ago that suggest this was a bug in 
earlier releases.
