[Evolution] html e-mail still won't load images off 'net

I can't for the life of me figure this out and it's beyond the
irritation point. I'm running evolution 1.3.92 from debian sid. I
cannot get images to load in HTML e-mail. I have tried removing my
entire evolution directory to somewhere else and restarting (didn't
work), changing my HTML mail settings in evolution's configurator to
"always load images from 'net", as well as the others (didn't work), and
hitting "View | Message Display | Load Images" (didn't work).

I realize that some purists would view this problem as a blessing or
perhaps a feature, but for me, it's just broke.

Can anyone tell me....

1) how can I do a complete start-from-scratch with evolution? I was
hoping that this problem would go away with evo 1.4, but apparently not.

2) where are the configuration settings kept for the gtkhtml control
(or, what and where do I need to change to get this to work???)

3) how can I debug whatever it is that is going wrong??? When I load an
html e-mail, all I see at the bottom of evo's preview pane is
"Working....", which goes away in ~ 30 seconds with no images loaded.

TIA.
