Possibilities:

- bug in rpm / rpm database corruption
- packaging bug (e.g. hanging postinstall script that redirects all
output to /dev/null).  If this were an easily reproduced bug, there
would probably be more reports of it, though.

So it freezes, and then what? It's still frozen? You kill it?  I've seen
mid-transaction termination of rpm transactions lead to all sorts of
ugliness.
