which processes are those? evolution-wombat and evoution-alarm-notify
should always be running.

Why should they be running all the time? I am using Evolution within the
"BlackBox" windows manager and I do not need any alarm notifications (my
Palm-based PDA takes care of that...).

Anyway, I have successfully applied the advice, offered by other members
of the mailing list and I can now conveniently terminate Evolution
(including the shared processes and their memory) without having to
reboot the system.
