Only files in package management will be overwritten on upgrade
(ignoring postinstall scripts, but they're not relevant in the current
context).  Files kept in ~, including your mail, shouldn't be affected
by package upgrades.

New versions of software can and will modify some files in ~, typically
because a configuration file format changed, or because a new
configuration option has been added.

If you want to be very cautious, you can close Evolution, run "killev",
back up ~/evolution, perform the upgrade, and run Evolution.  If there
are problems, one way out is to revert and restore ~/evolution.  Another
option is to use IMAP.
