Re: [Evolution] Evolution 2.0 UI proposal

I really like the new design. I second Brett's idea about the tabbed
view. While I'm sure that people who generally read this list won't have
a problem adjusting to a menu written in binary, for the rest of the
user community I think tabs would make much more sense. A row of tabs
either along the left or along the top (though that could make the
design rather top-heavy), one for each of the major views.

I'm not sure how GTK would handle this, but I know that in Java, using a
tabbed view you have to pre-load all of the contents for all of the
tabs, so if this is the case with GTK as well, it could pose a problem
with the (GREAT!!) idea of only launching those processes that are
needed when they're needed.

      * The shortcut bar. It's been shown that only a relatively
small part of the Evolution user community actually uses it,
and we feel that it unnecessarily complicates the UI. The
new design is much simpler to navigate anyways, and the
shortcut bar would add clutter and complexity, both in code
and UI. Also, it wouldn't be easy to implement in this
model without keeping some of the shell's complexity that
we would like to get rid of.

I would really like to see something akin to the shortcut bar stay in
place. Much like David, I also have a great number of mailboxes, of
which I only really need to see a handful of at a time. With the
proposed layout, I would see 30+ folders on my IMAP server, with no way
to quickly just look for the one or two that I'm interested in. In place
of the shortcut bar, perhaps a customizable list to be placed in the
mail folders section? So that I could specify, select folders x, y, and
z, from servers a, b, and c, and show them under heading foo. That's
essentially all I'm using the shortcut for now.

And while we're on the subject of wishlists (this one being about as
likely to be fulfilled as my wish for a Enzo Ferrarri for Christmas...),
it would be EXTREMELY, TREMENDOUSLY, WONDERFULLY nice to use Evolution
to manage my GPG keys. (Then again, it would also be useful to have
Evolution make my coffee in the morning, pay the bills, and go to work
for me... :)
