Hello Etienne,
Thank you very for writing.

Well, I just updated to 1.2.2 and noticed something sad :(
Oh dear. I am sorry that this change is causing you inconvenience;
rest assured that the menu isn't necessarily gone for good, and that
your mail provides me with very useful data to use in figuring out
how/if the menu should reappear.
Is it just me or the choice of Spell-languages in the composer window
(Edit->Spell Check Languages) has gone?
Yes, indeed, that menu is gone. We removed it for the moment, because we
were receiving complaints from people who had difficulty in figuring out
the interaction between the languages in that menu, and in the settings
dialog.
To explain: In its former incarnation, the Edit->SCL menu contained a
list of all of the spell checking languages that you had installed, and
they were all selectable, regardless of their status (enabled or not
enabled) in the settings dialog.
This meant that you were able to change the list of enabled spell
checking languages in two places: the menu, and the settings dialog. The
problem that this caused is that the scope of the menu became unclear.
(Did it apply just to the current mail? To all future mails? Should it
really be able to override the settings you specified in the Settings
dialog?) To complicate things, if we decided to make the Edit->SCL menu
change the list of languages in the Settings dialog, then the scope of
that menu would be different than the scope of the other submenus in the
"Edit" menu.
So, since the menu had not been in Evolution for very long (only since
1.2 or so), we decided for the time being to remove it, until we had
time to think about how the interaction between it and settings dialog
should work, and to see how people reacted. :) It was our hope that in
the vast majority of cases, languages would not contain enough
overlapping words to cause any significant problem for a user who had
more than one spell checking language enabled. (Indeed, I have spell
checking in English and Italian enabled, and have been fortunate not to
run into any problems myself.)
For this reason, I am very interested in your next comment:
I use it a lot since by default I use French and sometimes I need just
English (like this message for example). Now I activated both in the
Prefs but I can still make errors depending on the language I am
writing.
Can you explain this with an example?
I was also wondering if you are using two languages and add a word to
the dictionary, which one is it added to?
That I don't know. Radek Doulik (psst, hey Radek!) should be able to
tell us, though.
Thanks again for your mail. Rest assured that we are definitely
considering different solution to the problem, including adding the menu
again and only making languages enabled in the settings dialog be
selectable in the Edit menu. Do you think this would better suit your
needs?
Looking forward to hearing back from you,
Anna
