Re: [Evolution] mbox file

I think this would be a great feature to add, if possible. Perhaps a
way to mark a folder as an archive folder so that the mail inside would
be stored in a compressed format that would be readable (granted slow)
by evolution.

I typically break my inbox and sent folders up in 6 month intervals for
historical purposes. I do find myself searching them about once a month
on average. As it stands, I've got about 650MB of email in my
~/evolution/local directory. Having the option to compress the stuff I
don't use very often but would like to keep handy would be nice.

I think you must be thinking of "Compact Folders" which is terminology

I seem to recall that mozilla mail (or was it some other mailer I used a
long time ago?) had an option to "compress mailbox", and that it was
necessary to do so in order to free up disk space after "deleting"
messages. If that's what you have in mind, Dennis, Evolution does
deletion differently, and compressing the mailbox after deleting mail is
unnecessary.

If you want to use compress, gzip, bzip2, etc. on the mbox file in order
to save space, as Not Zed says, Evolution won't be able to read it.
Probably only really useful for archival purposes.

How do you compress the mbox file?
