Maintaining, searching meta data is "expensive", hence it is not all
done.  This came up in the last couple of weeks.

No.  There is no check box.  Discussion, and request for such a feature
was mentioned in the last two weeks.  

Aside, my personal opinion is that although they appear (view) as
subfolders (and may be implemented as hierarchical directories),
sub-folders is not a natural concept in email.  Makes it a nice to have,
but there are things way higher on my personal list ;-)
