I'm not sure its really required.  Almost every project has the concept
of a 'nightly build' or snapshot, which is known to be bleeding edge,
and hence possibly wont even run at all.  Likewise the conventions for
beta imply a more stable near-release-ready version.

Snapshots are built every day from CVS, the Beta is a "blessed" release.
