How about an "Edit" menu item "Paste as text" with a binding of Ctrl+Shift+V? That sounds reasonable.
Barring that, there could be a GNOME clipboard that you could manipulate in some way. Like copy the formatted text, check the "Paste as Plain Text" box on the clipboard, paste into any GNOME app.
