OK - I've figured this one out with a little help from the wwwoffle proxy. For anyone else suffering this problem, grab the wwwoffle program from here: http://www.gedanken.demon.co.uk/wwwoffle/ and configure it up - it is very simple. Then, merely point your gconftool -1 settings at your local proxy and bam! off you go. It works, it's fast and it's easy. I recommend using the access control list to stop unauthorised use of your proxy.
