This whole issue is best served by using a server.
[The following is probably off-topic since server side infrastructure has nothing to do with Evo, but I still wanted to say it...] You are right : articulating everything around a server reduces the problem to a single interface instead of n² combinations of clients synchronizing with each other. And IMAP does is real well as far as mail is concerned. So the missing pieces are : - A directory server : I already access LDAP from Evolution, so I already have my whole directory from anywhere I sit. But it is still the company directory, not my contacts with my own annotations. So I would say that the "read" aspect of the problem is solved, but the "write" aspect still needs some work. - A calendaring server : There seem to be a few proprietary solutions, and the obvious need and user interest got some free software developers thinking about the problem. The standards are there, but it looks like there is still a lot of work to do to implement them. My mail, files and bookmarks are on the server. The only reason I carry my Palm Pilot is to keep my todo list, my calendar and my own contacts with me. I dream of the day when I can sit at any generic machine and find my complete personal work environment. Maybe I need Microsoft Exchange...
