Can Evolution use the $HOME environment variable instead of hard coded
paths?
Not currently.
Some things might be easy to change, others aren't so easy because a lot
of things need to be able to access the whole filesystem.
Hard coded paths in configuration file is a bad thing. Manually editing
the config.xmldb is prone to mistake. We expect the take up of Evolution
on our campus to be significant. As such, we could be inundated with
user complaints when their home account moves.
Well sometimes you need full paths.
Why can't Evolution use locate file paths that are relative to the
~/evolution/ directory?
Well, as i said above, and i'll repeat, it needs to also access paths
which are not relative to $HOME.
