This ->¤<- is the euro sign. (I suppose it will be visible all right for
the recipients, but while I am in the compose window I can't see it just
a funny symbol looking like a circle with 4 spikes into the corners)

F***, scratch this. it didn't work out, and funny enough, at the moment
I seem to be unable to even type the euro in the subject, to, or cc
line. I AM able to type it in gnome-term and every gtk dialog I tried.
And I WAS able to type in the header fields.

I have no clue what is happening here.

Your message is encoded in ISO-8859-1:

Content-Type: text/plain; charset=ISO-8859-1

If I go to View->Character Encoding and force it to be ISO-8859-15, it
shows up correctly (obviously)... Make sure you have the right encoding
on in the composer. (Edit->Character Encoding)
