Ok, I've seen this instruction come up several times now, but I am running
Mandrake 8.2 with KDE only (Gnome not even installed), thought some
libraries are obviously there since Evo works. So how do I set this
parameter in my situation. I want to set Opera as the default URL
handler.

Where do I set the default browser that Evolution opens up http links in
? I'm currently using Evolution 1.0.8
Thats an Gnome Setting, nothing related to Evolution.
Gnome 1: Check the Gnome Control Center.
Gnome 2: Not yet implemented in the CC -- IMHO you will have to edit the
file ~/.gnome/Gnome manually, section [URL Handlers].
