After a bit of investigation, it seems that it's just the "you have new
mail" which is b0rked. I've verified, with no new mail on my IMAP
server, Evo keeps telling me I have 1 new mail in my INBOX.


Could it be you have filters turned on and also have selected 'Hide
Deleted messages'? 
Maybe there is a moved(i.e. deleted) message in your Inbox that is not
shown. You can check that by unselecting the 'hide deleted
messages'-option.
