This should be selectable then - Bob Smith isn't going to understand /^>/

Perhaps the dialog should have two checkable options, one for straight
text insertion, and one for regex quoting.
I wasn't suggesting that a regexp be used to define the user's quote
string, but rather, a regexp could be used to *recognize* quote strings
in the body of a message. Frankly, I can't imagine how the former would
work (although someone might enlighten me ;o).
Anyway, as such, I wouldn't think it even needs to be a pref in the
prefs dialog. It could just be hardcoded to a value that would please
90% of folks (although it would be really nice if it could at least be
customized via a config file or something).
