I've downloaded gal-5.0 and compiled and installed it but I keep getting
errors when running ./configure for evolution saying that gal-5.0 or higher
must be installed. I didn't find any gal-devel-5.0 files -- are they
needed -- if so where do I find them.

Which version of Evolution are you trying to compile? Is it from CVS?
If it's from CVS, then you need the CVS gal. Just FYI, there isn't a
gal-5.0. There's a gal-0.4, and there may be a gal-0.5, and cvs gal is
up to gal-0.5.99.12, last I check.

They way ximian puts together the gal packages, you need 3: gal,
gal-devel, and libgal. gal is pretty much empty--just some docs.
gal-devel and libgal have the headers and libraries, so you need both of
those. For RedHat, anyhow. Debian probably is similar. They are
located in the download directories at ximian's ftp site.
