[Evolution] slowness

Hi,

I use evolution-0.10-100_helix_200104260701 with Ximian Gnome 1.4 on Red
Hat 7.1
I have many mail directories, some of them with more than 7000 messages
each (mysql-users, linux kernel mailinglist, etc.). Each directory is in
maildir format. For each directory there's at least one mail filter.

In these conditions, Evolution is extremely slow when i download new
messages. In the beginning it wasn't slow at all, but it became slow
when the folders filled up with messages.
Purging some folders helped a little bit.

What's the problem? What can i do to accelerate the program (other than
erasing all my messages)?
