really? I haven't experienced that at all. I even usually go to offline
mode when not connected (after getting several times the 'can't connect
to server' error dialog on mail checking), and it's just a matter of
seconds. I use POP only, so maybe that happens to you when using IMAP?
Yes, it's the time needed to retrieve unread IMAP mails apparently. But
what distrubs me is that apparently the net led isn't flashing
continuously, so maybe the connection isn't optimized (too many "wait
for ack" ?)
Well most of the protocol is "do something" "get confirmation". I am
not sure it is possible to pipeline requests which you would need to do
to up the throughput.
Infact there are definetly some parts of the protocol that cannot be
pipelined.
e.g. when you send a literal (which you need to in many cases of data
exchange), you have to wait for the server to respond before you upload
the data part of the literal.
Pretty badly designed protocol if you ask me, but thats what we have to
work with, although i'm sure there could be performance improvements
made in our implementation.
