The problem is that to expunge an mbox, you have to copy the entire
file back out to disk, so the larger it gets, the more time it's going
to take.

If it takes noticeably more time than just doing a "cp mbox mbox.new"
though, then something is probably wrong...

You can solve the expunging time problem by converting the folder from
mbox to maildir, but that might have other problems if your filesystem
doesn't deal well with directories with many many files.
