  Agreed.  This is all going to be fixed at some point.

Secondly, since Evo 0.8 told me it knew that this was the
first time I had used the application, it should have walked
me through a configuration process.

  Well the mandatory configuration process is started when needed...
I.e. when you try composing a message the first time, Evolution will
fire up the mail configuration druid.
