Perhaps what is needed here is a faq listing both required packages,
known problems (like the packages needing upgrade on Mandrake) and a
simple data flow chart for for the spellcheck process to enable some
user faultfinding.  At the moment it is a bit "black magic" and seems
overly complex and obtuse.  Perhaps the developer could spend an hour or
so documenting this so we can have a chance of finding where the
problems lie?
