I did as you suggested and opened a composer window, typed in garbage
and even selected the "Spell check Document..." menu option:

Output of gnome-spell-component: 
NOTHING

Output of gnome-gtkhtml-editor when I open a composer window:
gtkhtml-WARNING **: Getting cursor base for an HTMLText with no slaves
-- 0x81042d8

Does this tell you anything?
