Your correct just rm -f'ing the address book didn't change anything.  Didn't
do the oaf-slay, but I did reboot the system and this had the desired effect
also.  So I'm back in business.  Thanks to all who helped.

have to make sure evo is closed, do a killev and an oaf-slay.  then
restart evo.  i did this without the oaf-slay and my contacts were still
broken.  then someone told me to do the killev and oaf-slay and restart
and everything was fine.

it means losing the old contacts, but for me it was worth it. :-)
