Did the spell check not make it into .6 or is there a secret to turning
it on?


This is a packaging problem; GtkHTML still does have spell-checking
support, but it is not compiled in in the RPMs.

I don't yet know if we are going to release new 0.6
packages...  Probably you will have to wait for 0.7 to come out.
