Okay, I have one more thing to say about this (then I have to get back to
actually making Evolution work better!).

The long-term solution is to let the user decide. If they want the
advantages of encryption, compression, redundancy and transactions, and the
technology is there to provide it, they can choose to keep their stuff in
one file. If they want to be able to surf their Evolution stuff directly,
they can keep their stuff in a directory. Eventually, we'll be able to
provide a choice (that's the linux way anyway, right?).

Right now, I guess we're going directory-style.
