I assume it's so that you don't have your POP/IMAP passwds
hanging around in memory and also so that if you leave your desk
for a bit, but don't log out/lock your display, nobody else can
download your mail and read it while you're gone :)

Then again, if you're going to go to the trouble of "forgetting"
your passwords before you leave, you may just as well lock your
desktop...
