Err .. same config here, I just set my locale like this:
[xav nomade:~/parateam.com]$ cat /etc/sysconfig/i18n 
LANG=fr_FR
LINGUAS=fr
LC_ALL=fr_FR
SYSFONT=lat0-sun16
SYSFONTACM=iso15

And it works !

Oh, I had to delete and recreate the fonts.dir and fonts.scale files in my
(overloaded) truetype directory, they were wrong. More info at:
