Why not have pulldown menus for some of the properties where you
can choose from a list, and maybe have an 'Edit List' feature so
the user can add and subtract some of the categories? THis is
sort of like the Palm Pilot address book, and I find that feature
really cool... Of course, I even hate that stuff like Company
Name and Work Phone are required, because not all of your
contacts are professional... I hope Evolution can have a more
flexible, customizable system.

Actually Jeff, I believe that the addition of user defined properties is
possible, but I think part of the complaint is the large set of predefined
properties which don't appear to be removable without editing the code...
