[Evolution] Re: Act! 2000 Reverse engineering

Hi Tom,

I think Act uses a standard XBase format with a few slight differences.
Separate tables are kept in separate file (hence the .dbf .adb, hdb etc and the
index files adx hdx etc..)

The only thing I think that is no standard is the note / histories.. Goldmine
needs this ellaborate screen dump procedure to import them.. takes forever.. ;(

I could be incorrect but I had a look into it for my company ages ago..

PS. Just imported most of the Act data into M$ Access (standard dBase 5
format). the .ddf file is password protected though (looks like it could be
the notes/history table ) The *x files are the index files..

I found a resource that could potentially make reverse engineering the Act!

(Free is part of the link...)

According to their website, they provide the complete source to their
product, and it can access Act! 2000 database files and Goldmine files.

Thus someone should be able to spec the file format from their code, and
then have someone else do a clean room implementation to access the files.

There is a "Free 30 Day Test Drive" available.

What do you think?
