Oh, blow me.
:)
Spaces with file names make many existing Unix scripts and utilities out
here in the real world malfunction.
Amen! if it has spaces in the name or directory name, its pretty hard to
do simple things like use tab-completion to navigate down an absurdly
deep-but-non-forking directory hierarchy.
if i can't use the command line to move files around and, say, move stuff
out of your Inbox/Trash structure, i'm going to be pissed off. Having the
ability to write simple scripts to back up my data or, for example, purge
an abused wastebasket, is more than worth the trouble it takes to
'suggest' that the defaults not have spaces, dashes, underscores, or other
braindead punctuation.
if you're really worried about filesystem cruft, use a
dotfile-named-director... say for example ".evolution" and hide everything
in that. stupid people don't have any business poking around in the
filesystem to begin with.. smart people won't have any trouble.
jwz is hostile sometimes but he's DEAD ON CORRECT. :)
