why is it a showstopper?

He is probably copying them to, or using a network share of an NTFS filesystem. The colon is reserved for drive letter separation and possibly alternate data streams, if those are enabled.

Some of the file copy tools I use like WinSCP convert colons to %3A when naming the file. This works as long as you have it set to do the conversion both to and from consistently and don't change it.
